Answer Engine
The class of systems that respond to a query with a synthesized answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude. Weights authority, entity clarity, extractability, and schema depth more heavily than the Search Engine does. Failure mode: cited by no one.
The Answer Engine is the second of the three engines in the Three-Engine Model. It reads the same underlying signals as the Search Engine but weights them differently. Entity clarity, extractability, source authority, and schema depth matter more here than backlinks or click history.
Failure modes are distinct from search. A page can rank #1 on Google and still be cited by zero answer engines — usually because it reads like a brochure rather than an answer. A page can be cited by ChatGPT for queries it never ranked for on Google — usually because its entity definition is unusually clear and its content structure is extractable.
Measured via Citation Presence: a fixed prompt set per vertical, run against the four major engines, recording which sources are named and which are not.
