What it is
A sibling discipline to SEO, not a replacement.
AEO is what you do once you accept that the user no longer scrolls a list. They read an answer.
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring web content so AI answer engines extract, cite, and surface it in response to user queries. The surfaces are familiar by name: Google AI Overviews (the generated answer that now sits above organic results for a growing share of US queries), Perplexity (a citation-first answer engine increasingly used for B2B and considered-purchase research), ChatGPT (the largest AI assistant by user base, now with web-grounded answers via Bing), and Claude and Gemini (each with their own retrieval and citation logic).
The work has three input vectors. Extractability — structured data, clean server-rendered HTML, direct-answer formatting in the first 50 words of every page. Authority — named author with credentials, dated publication, named primary sources, organisation schema with knowledge-graph signals. Specificity — quantified claims, year-tagged data, vertical and audience specificity over generic copy. AI engines triangulate across all three; pages that score well on one but not the others are cited rarely, if at all.
AEO is not a pivot away from SEO. The two disciplines share most of their technical foundation — crawlability, mobile usability, page speed, structured content. AEO is a layer on top, optimised for a different ranking surface: the answer paragraph, not the result list.
