What this audit measures
Three rules this audit follows.
AI visibility is not a softer version of SEO. The engines that answer questions in-pane — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude — do not rank pages. They retrieve passages and cite sources. A page that ranks #4 and gets cited in AI Overviews beats a page that ranks #1 and doesn’t.
Citation Share Is the Metric
Rankings measure who Google shows. Citation share measures who the answer engines name. On the category-entry questions your buyers are now asking the AI surface, are you in the answer or absent from it? That number is the baseline. The audit measures it across all five major engines before recommending a single fix.
Extractability Is Necessary, Not Sufficient
Schema markup and answer-first content structure are prerequisites — they make your pages eligible for retrieval. They do not make you cited. Citation is decided by the next layer: E-E-A-T signals the models weigh, authority graphs they reference, and how cleanly your content survives summarisation. The audit reads both layers.
Zero-Click Is a Channel Now
Roughly 60% of searches end without a click (Similarweb 2024). For SMB and mid-market operators, that share of demand is being resolved in the answer surface — not on your site. Treating zero-click as “lost traffic” is the wrong mental model. It is a channel where the goal is being cited, not clicked. The audit measures your presence in it.
The audit, step by step
Measure. Diagnose. Sequence.
Three steps, one engagement. The audit reads your AI citation baseline first, traces gaps to their causes second, and hands you a sequenced fix list third.
Citation share, baselined.
The audit queries ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude on the category-entry questions your buyers ask — the queries that resolve in-pane before they reach your site. For each engine, the audit captures whether your business is cited, who else is, and what passages got retrieved. The result is a five-engine citation baseline, not a single Google snapshot.
Why you’re absent.
Missing from an AI answer is a symptom. The cause is one of four layers: schema coverage (can the engine parse your page), content structure (does the page answer the question in the first 100 words), E-E-A-T signal density (do the models trust your authority), or upstream citation graph (does anyone the engines already trust link back to you). The audit traces each gap to the right layer — the fix is different in each.
A fix list, ordered.
The audit ends with a written diagnostic ordered by extractability impact and effort tier — the fixes that lift citation share fastest at the front, the structural rebuilds (E-E-A-T signal architecture, authority graph work) at the back. Where the work runs in-house, the document is your spec. Where it runs through Signostic, the document is the brief.
What lands on your desk
A written diagnostic. Citation share, baselined.
One document, written for the marketing lead who has to brief a team or defend a roadmap. The deliverable is the same shape every time, even when the scope adjusts.
- The citation share baseline — where your business appears across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude on your category-entry queries
- The per-gap root cause — for each missing citation, which of the four layers is blocking retrieval (schema, content structure, E-E-A-T, or upstream authority graph)
- The fix list — sequenced by extractability impact, with effort tiers so a sprint planner and a quarterly roadmap can both work from the same document
The audit is not a software subscription. It is a snapshot of your AI citation surface at a point in time, with the diagnostic work to act on it.
Who the audit is for
What lands for a Manager or Director.
- ManagerA fix list keyed to what your CMS, dev team, or content team can actually ship — schema additions, content restructures, E-E-A-T signal placements. Effort-tiered so the quick wins ship this sprint and the structural work goes into next quarter’s roadmap.
- DirectorA read on where category demand is forming in the AI surface — and your share of it. Defensible at the next budget review. Useful in the agency conversation. Status-conferring when the CMO asks about “what we’re doing about AI search.”
Strategic frame
Strategy-led digital begins where buyers form consideration sets — no longer only Google.
The audit answers one question: where is your budget leaking. Strategy answers a different one: where is the consideration set forming, and are you in it. For SMB and mid-market operators in retail, auto, insurance, and home services, that question increasingly resolves outside paid search — in the AI answer surface, the social proof graph, and the category entry points buyers don’t announce.

What marketing leads ask about the AI visibility audit.
The questions that come up when a director or performance manager evaluates an AI visibility audit against their existing SEO work.
-
How is this different from a standard SEO audit?
A standard SEO audit measures ranking and traffic. An AI visibility audit measures citation share — whether AI engines name your business when they answer category questions. The mechanics differ: ranking is a Google algorithm decision; citation is a retrieval-plus-trust decision made by ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini, or Claude. Most SEO audits skip this layer entirely. This audit is built around it.
-
Which AI engines does the audit cover?
Five: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews (AIO), Gemini, and Claude. Each is queried independently on your category-entry questions, because retrieval behaviour differs — AIO favours schema-rich pages with clean E-E-A-T; Perplexity weights citation graphs; ChatGPT leans on training-data familiarity plus live search. The audit reads all five separately and reports them separately.
-
What if my business has zero AI citations today?
That’s the most common starting point and arguably the most actionable one. Zero citations means there’s no incumbent to dislodge — the work is foundational: schema coverage, answer-first content structure, E-E-A-T signal placement, and (where the gap is upstream) building authority graph presence. The audit identifies which of those layers is the binding constraint for your category specifically, so you don’t spend on the wrong layer.
-
Will fixing AI visibility hurt my Google rankings?
No. The fixes overlap with classical SEO best practice — cleaner schema, more extractable content structure, stronger E-E-A-T signals, better internal linking. None of those degrade traditional ranking. In most cases, they improve it. AI visibility work compounds with SEO work; it does not compete with it.
-
How long does the AI visibility audit take?
48 hours to 5 business days. The citation baseline runs first — that’s programmatic and lands within the first day. The per-gap diagnosis takes longer because each missing citation has to be traced to its specific layer (schema vs content vs E-E-A-T vs upstream authority). Sequenced fix list lands at the end.
-
Can my team implement the fixes without LocaliQ?
Yes. The audit produces a written deliverable that reads as a technical spec — schema markup additions, content restructure guidelines, E-E-A-T signal placements, authority graph targets. Most of the work is CMS-side or content-side and runs in-house. Where the gap is upstream (citation graph, authority placement), that work can run in-house too, through your existing agency, or through LocaliQ. The audit doesn’t gate implementation.
-
Does this replace a full performance audit?
No. This audit is a single-surface read — AI citation visibility. If you want the broader paid-search, landing-page, attribution, and SEO audit alongside it, see the full Signostic diagnostic. Some marketing leads run the AI visibility audit first to scope the AI surface before deciding whether to run the full diagnostic. Others run them together.
