What it is
A click intercepted, not a ranking lost.
AI Overview displacement looks like a ranking problem. It isn’t. The ranking is fine. The click was intercepted upstream by a generated answer the buyer read instead of yours.
AI Overview displacement is the loss of organic search clicks caused by Google’s AI-generated answer — the AI Overview, formerly tested as Search Generative Experience — consuming the user’s intent on the SERP before any link is clicked. The user reads the generated paragraph, optionally expands a People Also Ask box, and moves on without ever clicking through to a publisher. The ranking that previously sent them to your site is still there. The click is not.
The mechanism is straightforward. When an AI Overview is added to a SERP your business previously ranked well on, the user’s intent gets satisfied inside the generated answer. They form an impression of “what the answer is” and stop searching. Industry estimates from BrightEdge, Ahrefs, and Search Engine Land place the resulting click loss between 20% and 60% on affected queries, with informational queries taking the largest hit (often above 50%) and commercial queries taking 15% to 30%. Local queries are most resistant because the local intent — calling, getting directions, booking — usually requires a click that an AI Overview cannot satisfy.
AI Overview displacement is the fastest-growing subset of zero-click search and is most concentrated in YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) categories — insurance, financial services, healthcare, legal — because those verticals generate the highest volume of informational and definitional queries that AI Overviews handle most aggressively. The displacement layer compounds with the older zero-click features (featured snippets, knowledge panels, People Also Ask) rather than replacing them, which means the cumulative click-loss curve on a given query class can be larger than any single feature explains.
